Whales and Winter Sunsets

Sun setting over the ocean looking onto headlands and beach in Mendocino, California

One of my favorite things about winter on the Mendocino Coast are the spectacular winter sunsets. While winters here can be rugged with cold days and intense ocean swells, they are also beautiful and can be great reminder to slow down and enjoy each moment.

Another of my favorite winter sights are the whales. Each year we witness the breathtaking migration of the grey whales. These beautiful creatures pass along the Mendocino Coast as they make the longest journey of any mammal on the planet— all the way from Baja to Alaska. Seeing their spouts is a reminder of our connection to everything, and how our decisions each day can benefit the well-being of creatures both near and far, large and small, human and non-human.

As the days begin to get a bit longer, I hope we can take a bit of winter with us, and remember to make time to slow down and rest throughout the busy year ahead.
