Celebrating our Executive Director

If you're lucky, a few times in your life you'll welcome someone in who inspires you and encourages you to do and be your best. For me, this person was Elizabeth, the ED of MendoParks.

When I joined the MendoParks board of directors, Elizabeth had just started as the Executive Director. I was thrilled to see where Elizabeth would take the organization.

The last 3 years did not disappoint! Elizabeth has expanded our programs and services, streamlined operations, inspired participation (in staff, volunteers and board members), and spread the word about our lovely little organization far and wide.

As President of the board of directors, I have seen this change behind the scenes, but I've also seen it unfold in many different corners of our community.  In this issue of our MendoParks newsletter, we'll show you some of the ways we're making an impact on our community- and how Elizabeth is making a great impression, not just on me, but on everyone she meets.

Subject: Thank You!

Message: Hi Elizabeth,

My wife and I live in Honolulu, HI and saw you on the Room to Roam podcast with Roberta Gonzales. I want to thank you and your organization for all that you do. I know a lot of the things you do are done behind the scenes where no one, like me, really knows what you are doing. But please know that your impact is felt and seen by all who visit your parks.

We were so touched by the natural beauty of the area, the quaint shops, and the friendliness of the residents there. It was so peaceful and awe-inspiring. Coming upon your podcast has gotten us even more excited about our next trip.

We learned a lot about the parks we visited. We learned about Capt. Fletcher's Inn (and plan to visit), and got inspired that there are people and organizations like yours who do things so visitors, like my wife and myself, can truly have a wonderful experience.

Thank you for all you do! Wes

Volunteer Spotlight: Thor Lude

Thor Lude has a long family history here in Mendocino. His great-grandfather, Jerome B Ford, was one of the founders of the village of Mendocino and the name sake of the Ford House on the Headlands. Thor has been visiting the area for many years with his wife, Joyce, and so when he retired in 2019, it seemed like a perfect fit to join the MendoParks board.

"I wanted to have a sense of purpose and donate time to an organization I believed could make a difference."

Thor has been on the board of directors for 2 years and is currently our Secretary. He takes great notes, asks great questions and loves the Ford House best of all the parks (if he has to choose). He joins us remotely from his home in the Sacramento area when he can't be here visiting in person.

The parks need your support. Become a member today!

Almost all of the State Parks in Mendocino County have no day use or parking fees:

Isn't that wonderful?!

We are able to enjoy a lot of parks for FREE but while this is one of the Mendocino Coast's biggest perks it is also one of our greatest challenges.

Because these parks are not revenue generators, they receive very little support from California State Parks.

And that's where MendoParks steps in: What began in the 1980s as a handful of retired State Park Rangers now includes all of you who join us from near and far as dedicated park-supporters!

Become a MendoParks Member and help bring education and improvements to our parks.
